How to Get Rid of Little Ants in Your Maryland Home

Just because something is tiny, doesn’t mean it’s harmless.

When homeowners spot little black ants in their homes, they often shrug it off. However, it’s important to know if there are some ants, there are likely hundreds of ants. These little guys can destroy parts of your home, emit foul odors, and even attract other bugs into the house.

The question is how to get rid of little ants who’ve invited themselves into your home. We can help you there.

Keep reading for our top tips on how to get rid of ants to create a bug-free home.

Make Your Home Less Appealing

While your first instinct may be to find things that kill ants, you need to address the cause of the infestation. Why are the ants in your home in the first place? Odds are, you been unknowingly inviting them in.

To retract your invitation:

  • Don’t leave food sitting around (not even crumbs on the floor)
  • Take care of any excess moisture from leaking pipes, dripping faucets, outdoor spigots, etc.
  • Get rid of common ant shelters near the home (dead/rotting wood, debris, garbage, etc.)

Remember, ants are just looking for an easy way to survive. If that means foraging their way into your home for free food and water, that’s what they’ll do.

Seal off Entry Points

However, there are other important tips on how to get rid of little ants that have nothing to do with cleanliness. You need to limit their access from outside. This means sealing up common entry points they use to enter homes.

This includes:

  • Cracks in the foundation
  • Gaps in doors and windows
  • Cracks or holes in the siding
  • Gaps in the walls where wires, hoses, vents, or other fixtures protrude

You should also consider removing any vegetation that may be touching the home. These act as “highways” for ants and other bugs from the ground to your home.

Use Natural Ant Killers

Next, you can start looking into how to kill ants naturally. There are a variety of methods you can use here, depending on your situation.

You can poison the colony by mixing sugar with natural compounds that kill ants (diatomaceous earth or boric acid). Set the bait where the ants are commonly found. They’ll carry the bait back to the colony.

Alternatively, if you know where the nest is, you can pour boiling water down the entrance. For improved results, mix boric acid with the boiling water, just be careful not to breathe in the fumes.

Call in the Professionals

If you’re serious about ant eradication and are wondering, “how do I permanently get rid of ants in my house,” the answer is simple. You need to call a professional extermination company. They know how to take care of a problem and make sure it doesn’t come back.
