The first thing you should do is see if there are paper wasps in your bushes or not. Paper wasp’s stings are painful but despite that, they are good for your garden. It could be worth your while to leave the nest alone.
Need help deciding on what to do? That’s what we’re here for. Here is everything that you should know if you have these painful pests in your yard.
1. Paper Wasps are Beneficial
As aggressive as paper wasps are, they can help out in your garden. They make a meal out of caterpillars and other insects that will eat your plants. So, if you have a nest, it may be a good idea to leave it alone and let the wasps have their feast.
You’ll have to weigh your decision on the location of the nest. If it’s right in the heart of your garden, you may want to do something about it or risk getting stung.
2. Identifying Them
Can you not tell a wasp from other insects like it? Don’t worry, you wouldn’t be the only one. Most of them fall into the half an inch to one and a half-inch mark in size.
Their colors can vary. Some are orange, some are reddish-brown, and some have bright yellow and red stripes.
As far as the nest goes, the paper wasp is also known as the umbrella wasp because their nests resemble an upside-down umbrella.
3. They Will Sting You
Again, paper wasps are aggressive. If they feel like you’re provoking them they will attack you in an attempt to defend their nest. Their stings are painful and unlike honey bees, paper wasps can sting you more than once.
It’s also important to note that with one angry paper wasp comes several. When one feels threatened it will send out pheromones to call it’s brethren to come help it.
4. It’s Possible to Avoid an Infestation
Paper wasps do become a problem if you have an infestation on your hands. The good news is that there are ways to avoid that from happening. Make sure all your bushes and shrubs are trimmed away from your home.
Be diligent with picking fruits and vegetables from your garden if you have one. If you notice any cracks in your home, use caulk to fill them up.
If you do happen to still see a nest even after taking these precautions, call a professional to remove it. Don’t try to do it yourself.
